PACCT DC (Funded through 8/2011)

Program Overview & Significance

Most patients would consider a clinical trial if their doctors recommended they do so. A number of studies have shown that a trusted physician recommendation –and often by a primary care provider (PC)--was the crucial factor influencing patients’ decisions to enroll in a trial. Because of their longstanding relationship with patients, PCPs are ideally suited to introduce the topic of trial participation to their patients.

Funding from the DC Cancer Consortium, and the Community Health Administration, Department of Health, Government of the District of Columbia, PACCT  DC provided a unique, tailored training program to more than 100 DC-based primary care providers who serve minority patients.

The goal of the training, “Your Role in Cancer Clinical Trials,” was to enhance DC PCPs’ knowledge about cancer treatment clinical trials and their role in encouraging patients to consider clinical trials as an option for quality cancer treatment.

The "Your Role" Training:

  • Was provided directly at physician offices and health centers
  • Was tailored to physician/practice needs with a flexible agenda (30 minutes to 2 hours)
  • Was appropriate for MDs, RNs, NPs, PAs, and others who educate patients
  • Awarded CME and CNE credits for sessions of 60 minutes or more
