For oncologists, nurses, and clinical research associates, this course is designed to improve recruitment, consent and accrual procedures and processes in cancer clinical trials, especially among ethnic and racial minorities and the medically underserved.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand the impact of changing demographics and personal culture within the clinical research setting;
  • Describe current issues and future directions related to cultural competency and cancer clinical trials at the individual and organizational level;
  • Identify optimal strategies to enhance patient interaction in the clinical trial setting; and
  • Commit to an action plan for implementation of one strategy to enhance patient interaction.

LEVEL II
"Your Role in Action: Clinical Trial Staff"

Designed for cancer clinical trial staff, the purpose of this course is to feature strategies applied by cancer research staff and others to enhance patient recruitment and retention practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Consider the important role of community providers as sources to prepare patients to discuss cancer clinical trials and refer to oncologists already participating in cancer clinical trials
  • Review ways to create systematic approaches for screening eligibility and approach
  • Describe how the adoption of Cultural and Linguistic Appropriate Service (CLAS) Standards can be applied in the clinical research setting
  • Discuss effective approaches for the inclusion of patients with Limited English Proficiency or limited literacy in clinical trials
  • Develop your own plan for action for enhancing patient awareness and referral to oncologists participating in trials
