What's New at COHS
COHS hosted its third annual Black History Month
Celebration on February 2, 2008 at Vine Street
Community Center. The BID Initiative was heavily
featured and community leader peer educator and
CRAB member, Marjorie Hicks coordinated the BID
outreach activities for the event. Dr. Camara
Jones from the CDC was this year’s keynote,
and discussed the intersections of race as a
social construct and health outcomes. There were
over 200 people in attendance at the event that
contributed to this positive, intergenerational,
culturally diverse, event being a tribute to
community empowerment around health and wellness.
COHS and the BID Initiative are also involved in a cancer awareness campaign led by the Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center that will be unveiled in April 2008. We were particularly involved in the development of a series of posters on cancer prevention strategies that will be on display during National Minority Cancer Awareness Week, starting April 20th, at Codman Square Branch Library, Dudley Branch Library, Grove Hall Branch Library and Lower Mills Branch Library. Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center along with community partners: American Cancer Society, Faith-Based Cancer Disparities Network, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s Multicultural Cancer Task Force, the Wellness Community at Dimock, University of Massachusetts Boston, and Cherishing Our Hearts and Souls Coalition, are sponsoring these awareness events.
