What's New at COHS
June marked a significant milestone in community
peer education. Through the leadership of Lead
Trainer, Rose Brayboy and the efforts of all
of our active peer trainers we surpassed our
goal of training 200 community leaders in workshops/presentations.
The BID Initiative also excitedly welcomed a
new cohort of peer-trainers in April 2008. Thirteen
community leaders representing a wide range of
ages and ethnicities completed a three-day training
of trainers on April 12, 13, and 19th. This group
has been actively working to increase community
awareness around clinical trials through the
workshop/presentation model and the use of local
media. They have expanded the reach and impact
of the Breaking It Down Initiative. Carolyn Barnes,
for instance, hosted a feature on cancer clinical
trials on the public access channel, Boston Neighborhood
Network’ program Seniors Count. Peer trainer,
Mara Contreras, led the first Spanish workshops
for our initiative, conducted at the La Alianza
Hispana’s Annual Latino Health Festival.
